In this webinar, learn how Riverview High School (RHS) became a top finalist for the 2017 FETC STEM Excellence Awards in the High School Division. RHS has found a way to enact the research and provide a student-centered personalized learning environment that balances consistency with freedom, and specialization with renaissance education. The structures and practices built into the school day combined with an essentials-extensions model of assessment to allow students to master critical content and explore individual passions that go beyond STEM, STEAM or STEAM-H. RHS students say that they are transformed when they do real work for real people, often working harder on projects that don’t even count, because they matter.

Ian Fogarty, Chemistry and Physics Teacher at Riverview High School, highlights some of those projects and examines how teachers can organize their classes and how administrators can organize their schools from assessment to content delivery, to PBL, to passion projects in an attempt to educate the whole student living in a system of silos. This recorded webinar will be helpful for middle and high school teachers, as well administrators, who are trying to provide opportunities that will uncover abilities and passions in their students.

Ian FogartyAbout the Presenter
Ian Fogarty believes that school should be a place where students can explore their passions and discover new ones at the same time as solving real problems for real people. This belief stems from his work as a classroom chemistry and physics teacher as well as being the co-director of the SHAD UNB summer program. He believes that technology can be a powerful tool for learning when done correctly. Ian is a Microsoft Innovative Educator Fellow, a SMART Exemplary Educator, and a Nureva Lighthouse Teacher. His work has won national and international awards including 3rd place at the Global Innovative Educator Forum in Cape Town (2008), the Canadian Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence (2010), the Canadian Association of Physicists High School Teacher Award (2011), the American National Science Teacher Association STEM Educator (2015) and the New Brunswick Association of Engineers and Geoscientists STEM Educator award (2015).
